Online Bachelor Programs - Emerging Tech Arenas Need Graduates And Their New Ideas

Architects and interior designers are more often working with sustainable products and technologies. Students interested in green design these days have a variety of programs from which to choose. They can specialize in green design as part of bachelor's degree programs or learn about it in general architecture and design classes.

Design and architecture students might challenge their imaginations and find new ways to utilize their talents when enrolled in on-campus courses and schools online. The Desert Sun in Palm Springs recently reported on a motorized window covering business intended to conserve energy use and costs. Elite Traveler recently interviewed a carpeting manufacturer whose Green Label Plus certified company produces non-allergenic products made with raw materials from renewable resources. This same business also relies on electronic data storage as a means of reducing paper use, the Elite Traveler report noted.

At least one art and design college in Denver, Col, offers a Green Design Area of Emphasis whereby students participate in field trips, site visits and enjoy guest lectures and discussions. The programming addresses sustainable materials and methods for construction and interiors. In this school's standard design classes, students learn about sustainable practices such as how natural light reduces energy use and enhances the well-being of residents. A Boston college's sustainable design institute offers an online certificate program for students who want to learn about green design.

Some bachelors degree students choose to volunteer as a way of complementing their studies. This gives them hands-on experience and a way of connecting with their community. Interior design students might consider working with a local environmental organization to further their experience of sustainable living and practices. In turn, this may also increase the quality of their school work.

Students concerned about fitting in on-campus classes while they hold such a position may want to consider online degree programs. Such methods of study are more flexible than traditional bachelors degree programs, and students will have the free schedule to work with local environmental groups. Even if earth-friendly individuals simply want an activity outside of classes, this kind of volunteer work can boost a resume and make one seem more attractive to future employers.

Of course, it's not always easy to fit volunteer work in with college, university and technical school studies. Students faced with time challenges might consider online degree programs that are considered more flexible than campus studies. Online degree programs allow students to schedule studies between work and family responsibilities. Online college, university and technical school programs might also be considered environmentally friendly. Students enrolled in online schools don't have to commute back and forth to campus. They participate in studies from wherever they have Internet access, and often they participate in studies from their residences.

Becoming LEED-certified is another way bachelors degree candidates working in architecture or interior design can demonstrate their commitment to the environment. LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and those who achieve certification indicate their commitment to sustainable living. Professionals are eligible for LEED certification after a project that they've handled has been LEED registered. Professional groups such as the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association might also offer green certification.

The American Society of Interior Designers holds continuing education classes throughout the year. In April 2010, the society and Hospitality Design Magazine recognized sustainable designs as part of its Earth Minded Awards. The winners, from Las Vegas to Bali, Indonesia, had used reclaimed barn wood, green label carpeting, gray water systems that recycle shower and bath water, landscaping focused on local plants and rain water catchments systems that save more than 41,000 gallons of water each year that could be applied around the resort. All of these innovations are confirming that associate's degree program graduates from online universities are entering arenas where their infusion of new ideas will be more than welcomed.
